Our Story

Phoenix was founded in 2005 by Dr. Gregory Piefer following the completion of his PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The compact neutron generators constructed and refined in Phoenix’s lab provide government and commercial entities in industries such as aerospace, defense, and healthcare with simpler solutions for radiography, nuclear fuel scanning, and medical isotope production.

In 2010, Phoenix founder Greg Piefer founded SHINE Medical Technologies, a spinoff of Phoenix headquartered in Janesville, Wisconsin. Phoenix provides SHINE with nuclear technology which SHINE uses to produce Molybdenum-99, the most widely-used medical isotope in the world. SHINE aims to be

Phoenix’s upcoming Neutron Imaging Center, set to open in 2019, will provide neutron radiography as a service at a greater scale, further opening up the market and allowing commercial entities who have previously lacked the means to take advantage of neutron imaging to do so.
