R&D Test Engineer

Department: Research & Development

Reports To: Vice President – Research & Development

Position Overview:

The R&D Test Engineer will work with senior R&D staff to operate, test, and troubleshoot accelerator systems and related hardware platforms.  He/she will also be responsible for performing analysis on collected data and presenting the analyses.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate Phoenix accelerator systems and test hardware.

  • Develop, conduct, and document experiments utilizing test hardware.

  • Test, debug and repair components and assemblies from circuit boards to assembled modules.

  • Analyze data, develop working theories, and present conclusions to senior R&D staff.

  • Assemble and test selected electrical and mechanical assemblies.


  • Exceptional electromechanical skills. Ability to assemble and wire large electrical / electromechanical components per mechanical drawings and schematics.

  • Experience with high vacuum systems, high voltage (>50 kV), and/or plasma systems desired.

  • Experience with mechanical design, CAD, and basic machining/fabrication highly desirable.

  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics with simple to moderate level analog circuits.

  • Experience operating complex equipment – ability to understand nuances of various test methods and equipment, when to apply what techniques/tools for a given situation, and how to interpret collected data. 

  • Strong writing skills.  Ability to create documentation covering setups, procedures, data acquisition and analysis, etc.  

  • Ability to function in an environment that has a high level of complexity and that requires several projects to be worked on concurrently.

  • Ability to perform operational tests and fault isolation on development systems and equipment to ensure conformance with design specifications, diagnose and isolate malfunctions down to component level, conduct defined engineering tests and collect data as assigned.

  • Ability to utilize development or diagnostic equipment including oscilloscope, DMM, signal generators, data loggers, and similar equipment.

  • At least 3 years’ experience working in a technical environment.

  • BS degree in engineering or equivalent.
